Are You Shopping Safely or Falling for Temu Scams?
Temu scams are getting harder to spot. Learn the most common types, the red flags to look for, and how to protect your money when shopping online.
This app beat Amazon at one time. Yes, we are talking about Temu. Highly condemned by many youtube creators, customers but still having monthly active users, around 292 million, Temu is one of the fastest growing shopping platforms. Temu in itself is not a scam, just that it has started to lose its reputation because of low quality products. Also, having 40% of its base in the US and the losing reputation, all of this was taken as an opportunity by scammers and their planning began as they say ‘once a thief, always a thief’.
Temu is legit. But the name, branding, and the expectation of low prices have become tools scammers use with increasing sophistication. Here is what Temu scams look like, how they operate, and how to make sure you are never on the wrong end of one.
Past Temu scams to watch out for

Fake promo codes and giveaway scams
Such codes mainly come from emails, social media posts, or WhatsApp forwards, promising exclusive discount codes, free gift cards, or special shopping credit. They direct you to a fake website that looks like Temu and ask for personal or payment details before you can claim the reward. Now congratulations, you have given your data to claim the reward which will never get to you.
Fake customer support scams
The most common one faced by all of us and many have been a victim to this too. It’s not just about Temu scams, many other scams happen through fake customer support. Temu or any legit platform will never request you for your OTP, banking details or any personal information. Also, try using the official support email for resolving any such queries.
Fake Temu websites and phishing links
Scammers build exact copy paste websites that are 99.9% visually identical to the real Temu storefront. These sites appear in search results through paid ads. Other ways could be text messages, emails or social media. Once you enter your details or make a purchase on a fake site, your payment information is stolen outright and you receive nothing, or a worthless item.
‘Image different from product delivered’ issue
You might see that some products when delivered do not match what you actually receive. This is because the listed products are stock photos. Hence, when you receive the parcel, it’s a disappointment. Also, many Temu shoppers have this complaint. You paid for a product that looked as if it has great material or quality but what arrives is not the same.
Order tracking text scams
The most widely used trigger, that your delivery has been delayed due to an ‘xyz’ reason. Of course, you would instantly do anything to track, we all are excited for our order. But, please don’t click on any link that asks you to reschedule or click on a link to verify your address. All this is basically done to fetch your payment details or install some malicious software on your device.
Brushing scams
You receive a package from Temu that you never ordered. This sounds harmless but it is not. It means a seller has your name and address and is using them to post fake verified purchase reviews. Your data is already in their hands.
Is Temu legit or a scam?
As mentioned already, Temu is a legitimate e-commerce platform owned by PDD Holdings, with a gross merchandise volume of $29.5 billion in 2024. Millions of people use it every day and receive what they ordered.
But as of June 2026, Temu has a 1.9 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot, and it operates as a third-party marketplace, meaning the quality and reliability of what you receive depends on who is selling it. EU researchers found that 18 out of 19 toys purchased on Temu broke safety rules. US buyers regularly report receiving items that do not look like the product listing.
More importantly, Temu's popularity makes it a high-value target for a phishing campaign. Temu shoppers do not need a high success rate to be profitable. Scammers do not need to hack Temu. They just need you to believe they are Temu. Learn about the latest updates regarding Temu here.
How to avoid a Temu scam?
Getting scammed and also being an enthusiastic shopper, this is no surprise. That combo works well. Because, you are not that alert while shopping. Also, the eagerness to get the product delivered to you as soon as possible often leads to making a blunder. But, you can avoid this in future by doing the following:

First things first, download Temu’s official app, go to the official website and get redirected to the app/play store from there.
Do not use the same email on Temu as the one you use for your banking.
Yes remembering passwords is a task, but always keep it different from your personal or banking information.
Do not get lured by 50-80% sounding deals. No reputed brand offers that, also shop from star brands on Temu like Nike or Gucci.
Use a 2-factor authentication method to lower the risk of getting scammed.
Do not click on any link that comes on your text message to complete the payment.
Say something like, pay now to avoid the hassle later or to avoid a COD charge.
Payment methods should always be from well-known providers and not someone you are hearing about for the first time.
Following the above should definitely save you from a Temu scam or rather any scam being an online shopper.

Where Vault Steps In?
Next time you are unable to identify whether you are actually purchasing from Temu or not, the landing page you saw from an ad shows products from this website or is a fake copy. Worst case scenario, you are redirected to a refund portal which does not belong to Temu, Vault’s browser or app extension can save you from the headache.
When you click a link from a WhatsApp forward, a "track your order" SMS, or a Temu giveaway post on Instagram, Vault's website risk detection checks the destination before you start typing anything. If the URL is a lookalike domain, a recently registered site, or one already flagged for phishing, Vault surfaces a plain-language alert right there in the browser, something like "this site is impersonating a known retailer," instead of a technical warning you'd have to decode yourself. You get the choice to leave, continue anyway, or ask the built-in AI assistant why it was flagged.
The same protection extends past your browser. Since a lot of these scams travel through SMS (the fake delivery delay, the "reschedule your package" text), Vault's SMS protection on mobile flags suspicious links before you tap them, and if you've already handed over an email address on a fake giveaway site, email alias protection limits how far that exposure spreads since the address attached to your real inbox was never the one exposed. You shouldn't have to be a cybersecurity expert to shop safely. Let Vault check the link so you don't have to.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are Temu scams common?
Yes definitely. The internet is full of examples, which you should check out to avoid becoming a target.
Is Temu itself a scam?
No it is not. Temu sells low quality products but is not an illegal platform. It’s operated by PPD holdings. Scammers may use it by creating fake links, phishing campaigns, etc.
How do I know if a Temu website is fake?
Look for the official website. Never redirect through an ad, email or text as that is the most common way scammers use to fool you.
What should I do if I receive a suspicious Temu message?
Just ignore it. This should be your first action. Now check your order section for the real update or speak to customer care at the official number or mail.
Are there any chances that I can get back my money after a Temu scam?
You can give it a shot. Reach out to your bank, tell them that it was a fraudulent activity and ask them for a chargeback. If it’s a direct bank transfer, the chances of getting back your money are pretty low.
